Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK)
What is Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) and how is it related to Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK)?
Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) is an umbrella term that includes the Transitional Kindergarten and expanded learning options to support access to a full day of educational services for children age 4 and under in high-quality educational programs. The Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 created transitional kindergarten, the first year of a two-year kindergarten experience, which initially was available for students born between September and December. In 2021, legislation was passed that requires any district operating a kindergarten to also provide a Transitional Kindergarten (UTK) program for all four-year-old children by 2025-2026.
What is the plan for Transitional Kindergarten in San Gabriel Unified?
In San Gabriel Unified, all four-year-old children who turn 5 on or before February 2nd will be enrolled in UTK. Additionally, San Gabriel will enroll all four-year-old children, who's 5th birthday falls between February 3rd- June 30, 2023 in the 2022-2023 UTK program as space allows.
