San Gabriel Unified School District presents the Portrait of a Graduate, a visionary expression of the qualities and skills the District seeks to develop in all students who earn a diploma from SGUSD.
The Portrait of a Graduate contains eight areas important to ensuring that students complete their school experience ready for college and career and prepared to contribute and thrive in the world around them. They are Creative Thinker, Collaborator, Global Citizen, Empathetic, Communicator, and Resilient.
The San Gabriel Educational Advisory Committee collaborated to create this vision and plan for the development of these future ready competencies in our students. Creative Thinker
The San Gabriel Unified student has an innovative mindset. They honor originality and take risks in their designs and responses knowing that there are a variety of answers to solve many problems. They develop questions, use critical thinking, and practice honest reflection to power their imagination. The San Gabriel Unified student uses their imagination to positively impact the world around them.
Collaborator
The San Gabriel Unified student brings their own individuality to a group and respects the individuality of others. Their contributions help to push the team forward. They hear all voices. They can receive criticism, incorporate feedback, and can move on after reaching a consensus. The San Gabriel Unified student values diverse viewpoints when working towards a shared goal.
Global Citizen
The San Gabriel Unified student learns from diverse literature, experiences, and voices. They are open-minded, strive to be ethical problem solvers, and seek to diversify their views. They are connected to humanity through knowledge of geography, current events, and an awareness of our diverse cultures and ideologies. They are informed, participate, and vote. The San Gabriel Unified student is driven by social responsibility.
Empathic
The San Gabriel Unified student has the courage of heart to stand up for kindness. They understand that their actions can positively impact others and that there are other stories that exist beyond their own. They understand and accept diversity in all shapes and sizes. They strive to understand history from multiple perspectives. The San Gabriel Unified student is compassionate and sees through a lens of equity.
Communicator
The San Gabriel Unified student can write and speak about diverse topics and respond appropriately to multiple audiences. They are able to share ideas through several mediums, be open-minded to opposing ideas, and provide solid evidence for their claims. They are listeners as well as speakers. The San Gabriel Unified student understands that their ability to communicate has consequences and that there is power in accurate two-way communication.
Resilient
The San Gabriel Unified student accepts challenges, advocates for themselves, and never gives up. They know that failure is a part of a process, and they have the ability to cope and adapt. They are flexible. They know it might take time to master something and when they fail, their self-talk propels them forward. They face their own fears with courage. The San Gabriel Unified student is empowered by the process of pushing through challenges.
