Governing Board Members Take Office; Outgoing Member Honored for Service

SAN GABRIEL, CA – Recently re-elected San Gabriel Unified Governing Board members Cristina Alvarado and Dr. Gary Thomas Scott, as well as newly elected member Rochelle Kate Haas, took the oath of office during the board’s annual reorganization meeting on Dec. 11.

Haas, a 15-year San Gabriel resident with four children in San Gabriel Unified schools, filled the seat vacated by member Ken Tcheng after he chose not to seek re-election.

“I feel blessed to be part of a District that provides high-quality academic programs and one that has kept an emphasis on visual and performing arts,” Haas said. “My hope is that we continue to offer these excellent opportunities to our students and develop ways to address their social-emotional needs. It is an honor to serve on this board, and I look forward to doing my part to continue the great work of our District.”

Haas said she hopes to work with the board and SGUSD staff to improve school climate and student mental health.

Tcheng, a 34-year San Gabriel resident who serves as general manager of Sunny Slope Water Co. in Pasadena, was elected to the Governing Board in 2001 and again in 2013.

Tcheng was honored by the Governing Board during his final meeting on Nov. 13, when colleagues praised him for his thoughtful direction, collaborative spirit and dedication to the school community.

“It was an honor to sit on this board and serve the students, staff and families of San Gabriel Unified,” Tcheng said. “Together, we have worked to ensure that we are acting in the best interest of the students, and I am certain those efforts will continue.”

Tcheng plans to remain involved in the community and spend more time with his family.

“Ken provided a corporate perspective and thoughtful direction to the board, and we thank him
for his years of service to the District,” SGUSD Superintendent Dr. John Pappalardo said. “We
welcome Rochelle, an active member of our San Gabriel Unified community, to her new role.
Together, we will continue to work together to ensure our district and our students continue to
thrive.”
