Description: We will partner with the Science Project at UCLA who will provide a three day summer institute where teachers will engage in authentic science learning experiences that will enhance their knowledge of both science content and science pedagogy, particularly as related to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). UCLA will return throughout the school year to work with teachers through two rounds of lesson study during which teachers will work in teams to plan, teach, and reflect on NGSS aligned, three dimensional lessons.

Outcomes:

Teachers will develop understanding of the research and guiding assumptions that informed the new vision for science education found in the A Framework for K-12 Science Education (NRC, 2012)
Teachers will experience and begin to understand the three dimensional nature of NGSS by understanding how the Science & Engineering Practices support conceptual understanding of the Disciplinary Core Ideas.
Teachers will begin to understand the importance of “storytelling” around every day phenomena as way to experience and plan units of study in science.
Teachers will transfer their understandings of NGSS, three dimensional learning, and conceptual understanding into practice.
