Dual Language Immersion FAQs

What are Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs?

San Gabriel Unified’s Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs provide students the opportunity to learn and thrive in two languages, starting in kindergarten or transitional kindergarten. Students develop high levels of proficiency and literacy in both English and the target language (Mandarin or Spanish) while meeting or exceeding California State Standards in all academic areas.

Which languages are offered?

SGUSD currently offers two DLI programs:

  • Mandarin Dual Language Immersion (MDLI) at Wilson Elementary School (80/20 model)
  • Spanish Dual Language Immersion (SDLI) at McKinley Elementary School (90/10 model)

Both programs continue through Jefferson Middle School, with pathways for advanced biliteracy study in high school.

What is a “target language?”

The target language is the language, other than English, used for instruction in the program. For example, Mandarin is the target language in the MDLI program, and Spanish is the target language in the SDLI program.

How long are students expected to stay in a DLI program?

To achieve bilingualism and biliteracy, students are expected to remain enrolled in the program through at least fifth grade. Continuing in the program through middle and high school helps ensure full proficiency and lasting academic benefits.

Does my child need to speak Mandarin or Spanish to apply?

No prior proficiency is required for transitional kindergarten or kindergarten applicants.
Students applying for grades after first grade must demonstrate proficiency in the target language through screening before placement.

How does the application process work?

Each year, SGUSD accepts a limited number of new DLI students through a random lottery process.

  • Application window: January 6 – January 23, 2026
  • Applications received after January 23 will be added to the waiting list.
  • Families will be notified of placement results by email after the random selection.

How do I schedule a language screening?

If your child speaks the target language at home or has prior exposure, you’ll be asked to schedule a language screening at the time of your online application.
If scheduling is not available through the system, Sonia Nagahiro, Secretary II, Language Services, will contact you to arrange an appointment. (Email Sonia Nagahiro)

Who can apply to SGUSD’s DLI programs?

Any student eligible for enrollment in SGUSD may apply. Families living outside SGUSD boundaries may also apply but must obtain both:

  1. A release from their home district, and
  2. An interdistrict transfer into SGUSD.
Homeless and foster youth have the right to apply regardless of residency documentation, as determined by the district liaison.

Is there sibling priority in the application process?

Yes. SGUSD values keeping families together.

How will I know if my application was received?

Families will receive a confirmation email after submitting your application. If your family does not receive confirmation within five business days before the random selection, please contact the Multilingual Services Department.

What happens if I submit multiple applications or want to make changes?

Only the most recent application will be considered. Demographic updates can be made by contacting the Multilingual Services Department but program selections cannot be changed after submission.

Can I apply for both the Mandarin and Spanish programs?

Yes. Families may apply for both programs, but if accepted to both, families need to choose a program within 24 hours of acceptance notification so that another family on the waiting list can be offered the open space.

How will I be notified of the lottery results?

Families will receive results via email (or phone call if no email was provided) after the random selection process is complete.

What if my child is placed on a waiting list?

Waiting lists expire before the next application cycle begins. Families who wish to be considered for the following year must reapply during the next school year.

What if we move out of the district after enrollment?

If a family moves outside SGUSD boundaries after a child has been enrolled, the family will need to request a release from their new district and an interdistrict permit from SGUSD to continue in the program.

May I withdraw my child from the DLI program?

SGUSD expects families to complete a full year of the Dual Immersion program.

Is transportation provided?

No. Families are responsible for their own transportation to and from school.

Who should I contact for more information?

For questions or help with the application or screening process, contact Sonia Nagahiro: Secretary II, Language Services
