Hour of Code at Washington

As part of Computer Science Education Week, our students participated in the Hour of Code worldwide event. Hour of Code is an international grassroots movement designed to introduce students to basic coding. During the weeks of December 11th and December 18th, each student spent one-hour coding on iPads, Chromebooks, or in the computer lab. We utilized several programs including allcancode.com, code.org, and Kodable.com, and kept track of how many lines of code each student completed. At the completion of the two weeks the scores were tabulated for each classroom. Ms. Morioka-Shimazu’s first grade class wrote the most lines of code for lower grade and Mrs. Feng’s 4th grade class wrote the most lines for upper grade. These two classes won a programmable robot for their classrooms! The students from each grade level that wrote the most lines of code also received certificates presented by Mr. Perry. Our students did an excellent job using their critical thinking and problem solving skills to code!

She was one of only 9 cellos in the 7th grade, in an orchestra of 80 students from all over California. Students rehearsed for three days before performing for music educators and directors from all over California, at the San Jose Performing Arts Center on February 19.

Julia Magallanes 8th Grade represented JMS in the All – State Junior High School Honor Choir, as a second soprano. There were over 400 students that auditioned, and only 154 students were selected from over 40 middle schools, junior highs, and high schools from throughout the state. Del Mar HS Athletics

Did you know that Del Mar HS has an athletics program? We play games in flag football, basketball, softball and soccer in the San Gabriel Valley Continuation League (SGVCL). Along with eight other schools, we compete in this co-ed league to give our students the opportunity to meet and compete against students at other continuation schools, give them an opportunity at extra-curricular activities and to experience a rewards based program to help motivate them to work hard. Students must be attending school at 80% or better, have positive grades and behaviors in order to play. It has been a great program for our school and other schools in the league.
